Eduardo Bonnin, one the lay founders of the Cursillo Movement said, “Cursillos are held…not so that there will be a large number of cursillistas…but to have living and active Christians.” “The Cursillo Movement is a movement of the Church which, by means of its method, makes possible for people to live what is fundamental for being a Christian. By living it with others, it helps people discover and fulfill their personal vocations. The Cursillo Movement promotes the creation of core groups of Christians who leaven their environments with the Gospel”.
Knowing the purpose of the Cursillo Movement, one can then focus on the purpose of sponsoring. The purpose of sponsoring is to bring about a change in the environments. Sponsoring is not a haphazard circumstance. It should be a deliberate act to bring Jesus Christ into the world. Therefore, sponsors should know the candidates very well. If they are married, you should know their spouse also. The candidates will become the agent for change in their families, work situations, neighborhoods, social gatherings, etc.
Understand the goal of the Cursillo Movement and their responsibility as sponsors by reading the Sponsor’s Booklet.
Know that potential candidates fall into three categories 1) those who ought to go, 2) those who can go and 3) those who cannot or should not go.
Know the candidate as well as possible and pray for direction from the Holy Spirit. Remember to speak to God about others before speaking to others about God.
Know information about the candidate. Information like marital status, number of children, parish that the candidate attends, specific environments that the candidate is immersed in. In addition, the candidate must be a baptized, practicing Catholic who is able to participate in the Sacraments of Church; should be able to make decisions as an individual and should be open to participate in Post Cursillo programs.
There is one more thing that a sponsor should do before the Cursillo weekend. Make sure that the candidate has read the booklet entitled The Cursillo Movement – What Is It?
The PreCursillo/Sponsorship is probably the least understood part of the Cursillo method, yet in terms of evangelizing environments, it is the most important element of the method. It can be said that our Post Cursillo will only be as good as PreCursillo.
Process to sponsor a candidate:
Below is a simple, general process to follow for sponsoring a candidate in Cursillo.
READ AND UNDERSTAND “THE CURSILLO MOVEMENT’S SPONSOR’S BOOKLET You can obtain a copy by contacting a member of the Secretariat,
See the website for (Secretariat contact information)
About a prospective candidate, talk to your friend about Cursillo and give them a copy of the introduction to Cursillo to read.
Follow up to discuss the introduction sheet and gauge interest.
If you decide to proceed, obtain a copy of “The Cursillo Movement – What Is It”? Booklet from a member of the Secretariat.
Read the booklet, give it to your friend, and tell them to read it. Follow up with your friend to discuss the booklet and answer any questions.
NOW invite them to attend a Cursillo weekend. If they say yes, obtain an application by clicking below:
Click here for: ===> Candidate Application and Sponsor Form from Pre-Cursillo and give it to your friend. Tell them to fill out the application completely and return it to you with their deposit.
Submit their application and deposit along with your completed sponsor form to:
Covington Cursillo Movement, c/o Jean Cate, 57 Southview, Ft. Thomas, KY 41075
This completes the initial step for sponsorship, but not the sponsor’s responsibility.
The responsibility of a sponsor is much more than just delivering their candidates to the doors of the Cursillo center. Sponsors should discuss the weekend with their candidates and assure them that they may ask any questions and will be told anything they want to know about the weekend. Sponsors also need to provide support and prayer for their candidate during the Cursillo weekend and, most importantly, nurture their friendship throughout the new Cursillista’s Fourth Day.
http://signup.com/go/xM1qrwA palanca letter is one that is sent to the candidates and team, informing them of the prayers and sacrifices that you are offering to God on their behalf. A letter may be sent explaining what type of palanca is being offered, but the letter is NOT the palanca. The actual palanca is the action – intercessory prayer, sacrifice, or works of mercy, and it can be done without writing a letter.

School of Leaders
The purpose of School of Leaders is threefold: First it helps to accelerate what is fundamental for being Christian and living our fourth day to the fullest. Second it helps prepare and perfect us to share the Cursillo Method with others, by going beyond what we are able to accomplish in the three day weekend and third; it helps form leaders. The School gives participants information and formation by means of study to prepare us to be better leaders and team members in our call to: make a friend, be a friend and bring a friend to Christ.
To help us accomplish the purpose of the School of Leaders, the Secretariat is asking fellow Cursillistas to prayerfully consider our individual call to be leaders in our Movements. Our hope is that individuals who feel called to participate on teams or to lead future 3-Day Weekends, will actively participate in a curriculum designed to help us more fully understand the fundamental Charism of the Cursillo Movement so we can more effectively spread the Gospel Message.
Although Cursillo teaches us that we need a lifetime of study, piety and action the Secretariat for the Diocese of Covington Cursillo is asking us to commit to participating in a series of 8 School of Leader Sessions over a 24 month period. Sessions will be help quarterly with a session held on a weekday evening and then repeated on a Saturday morning to help accommodate the busy schedules of our participants.
PLEASE SEE OUR CALENDAR OF EVENTS FOR THE DATE AND TOPIC OF THE NEXT SCHOOL OF LEADERS.
All School of Leader Sessions will be held at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Ft.Mitchell. Sessions will be held in the Parish Center, located in the lower level of the school. If you park behind the school, continue to the left side of the school and follow the walkway that leads between the school and the Parish Office/house. The Parish Center will be on your right as you proceed down the walkway.
Special Note:Participants do not need to complete the 8 Sessions in order. Since we expect future Cursillistas to join the school after their Cursillo Weekend, we encourage anyone who feels called to join School of Leaders to participate as they are able and then complete any session they miss when we repeat the topics in the future.
If you have any questions or to RSVP for any of the Sessions, please e-mail: Scott Schilling at:firstname.lastname@example.org
In 2016 School of Leaders will be offered in January, April, July and October.

Group Reunion, Ultreya
The Cursillo Movement realizes that it will not be an easy task for us to try to bring Christ to our environments.
Therefore, the Cursillo Movement has two very important tools to assist each of us.
These tools are Group Reunion and Ultreya.
The Group Reunion is a small group of Cursillo friends that meet on a regular basis. The purpose of this meeting is to share with one another the growth that has taken place within each of us. We share our spiritual growth as well as our growth in becoming a person who strives to bring a Christ-like attitude to our environments. This meeting is referred to as a Friendship Group or Prayer Group.
As we make attempts to bring Christ into our various environments, we will sometimes become frustrated. The group Reunion also provides the continual support we need in order to persevere as a part of God’s plan.
The Ultreya (Spanish word meaning Onward) is the larger Cursillo community. It is the time for the members of the Group Reunions to meet with members of other Group Reunions. The Ultreya is also beneficial in providing the support and encouragement that each of us needs.
A Campbell County Ultreya is held at St. Therese in Southgate on the third Thursday of each month starting at 7:00 PM in the Undercroft beneath the Church (rear entrance).
A Kenton County Ultreya is held at St. Pius in Edgewood on the fourth Thursday of each month starting at 7:00 PM in the school cafeteria.
